RuPaul
Born RuPaul Andre Charles on November 17,
1960 in San Diego, California, this ubiquitous Amazonian superstar
has made a success in recording, film and television. After a
short stint in Atlanta selling used cars and making underground
films, RuPaul hit the New York nightclub scene with his own brand
of "terror" drag. He became a well-known club kid, but
soon found himself back in Atlanta. After some time on the streets,
he found himself back in San Diego with his mother, whom he described
as "the fiercest drag queen I've ever known" .
Revitalized and focused, the 6' 4"
(6' 7" in wig and heels) RuPaul soon returned to New York
with a glamorous new image and upbeat attitude. His 1993 hit "Supermodel"
propelled him into the national spotlight, which led to unprecedented
national fame for a drag diva. He starred in a hit show at the
Las Vegas Sahara Hotel in 1993, and had his own VH1 talk/variety
show in 1996 which lasted three seasons. He appeared in (to name
but a few) the films "But I'm a Cheerleader", "To
Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar", "The
Brady Bunch Movie", and "Crooklyn" as well as the
TV series "Port Charles", "Veronica's Closet",
"Nash Bridges", "Walker, Texas Ranger" and
"Sabrina, the Teenage Witch". Currently Ru has his own
New York WKTV radio talk show and is the spokesmodel for M.A.C.
cosmetics, where he is the co-chairman for the M.A.C. Aids Fund.
